Silk Soy Milk

Silk Soy Milk is a popular brand of soy milk on the market today. Many, many people are turning to soy milk as an alternative to regular, cow's milk - but is it really a good alternative? And, how does soy milk fit in an anti candida diet plan?

Background on Silk Soy Milk

The Silk soy milk company was the first to nationally distribute refrigerated soy milk in the US. The company was launched in 1996 and its' parent company is White Wave Foods. All soybeans used in Silk products are non-gmo and grown in North America. Not all their products use organic soy beans, however, they do sell some 100% organic silk soy milk products.

Soy Milk Pros and Cons

Soy milk, such as silk soy milk, and other soy products were once said to be the perfect health food. The soy industry touted the soy bean as 'natures perfect protein'.

People began using soy regularly, but not everyone felt they were experiencing the health benefits -even when they were using organic soy milk.

Research studies began contradicting the health claims made by the soy industry's marketing hype. People began questioning whether they should be eating soy products regularly, in moderation or even at all.

Let's take a look at the pros and cons of soy in our diet.

Pros of drinking Silk soy milk and eating other soy products...

  • complete vegetable protein

  • contains all essential amino acids

  • contains omega 6 and omega 3

  • has no cholesterol

  • rich in iron, B vitamins, calcium, and zinc

  • contain polyunsaturated fatty acids

  • heart healthy because very low in saturated fats

  • lactose free

  • same amount of calcium as cow's milk

  • traditional, fermented, organic soy products like miso, tempeh and natto
  • Cons of drinking Silk soy milk and eating other soy products...

  • it is highly allergenic

  • its' high phytic acid make-up may interfere with mineral absorption of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc

  • soy milk is not as nutritious as other soy options because it is not a fermented soy product such as miso, tempeh or natto

  • soy can have high pesticide amounts and is often gmo (genetically modified)

  • contains trypsin inhibitors which can interfere with protein digestion

  • can affect thyroid function

  • the phytoestrogen content can reduce/suppress menopausal symptoms which doctors feel may not be a good thing

  • heavily processed soy products such as hydrolyzed soy protein, texturized soy protein, soy protein concentrate, soy protein isolate can contain harmful chemicals and toxins

  • babies, lactose intolerant people and vegetarians may be at an increased risk when using soy

  • there are inconsistent studies to support its' daily use
  • Make Your Own Decision...

As with any controversy, what you learn often depends on who you ask and what you want to believe.

If you ask the makers of Silk Soy Milk if it is good for you, they will tell you - of course it is. In fact, they have dedicated a whole page of their website to arguing against any of the cons listed above in our pros/cons lists.

However, you can also find many health experts who will argue against the suggested health benefits of soy in your diet - like the video clips found below.

    Soy Milk and Candida

If you decide to include soy in your diet, there is some consensus that if you are healthy you can eat organic, non-gmo, fermented soy products in moderation - with no ill health effects.

This means no more than 3 servings of soy per week. Also, if you include soy, make sure it is part of a rich and varied diet.

But, what if you are battling Candida? One thing to consider is that soy is a highly allergenic food and sometimes when you have Candida you might have food sensitivities develop. It can be a good idea to avoid the foods from the highly allergenic group of corn, milk, peanuts, soy, eggs, shellfish, treenuts, and wheat while you are getting rid of your Candida.

A common link with Candida is a compromised immune system or a weakened one. Bear all this in mind when deciding whether or not soy is for you or not.

Also, consider talking to your doctor or health provider if you have further questions or concerns.
