Skin Infection Symptoms are Itchy Skin and More!

Skin infection symptoms are no fun, but fortunately, they are not usually serious.

A skin fungal infection is caused by an overgrowth of fungus, molds or yeasts.

It may be from Candida albicans yeast, dermatophytes, or a fungus called pityrosporum orbiculare. Candida Albicans yeast can cause 2 types of skin yeast infections.

Intertrigo is a yeast infection caused by Candida yeast.

This Candida rash occurs in skin folds and is often confused with jock itch.

This yeast overgrowth occurs in warm, moist environments like the skin folds under women's breasts, in your armpits, groin etc. Anywhere where moist skin rubs together causing friction.

Cutaneous candidiasis is also a skin yeast infection caused by Candida albicans. This rash can affect any skin surface. However, it is most common in the armpits and groin.

The skin infection symptoms for intertrigo or cutaneous candidiasis are a rash that is:

  • clearly defined
  • red
  • itching
  • burning
  • scaly
  • moistness- may seem consistently wet
  • may leak fluid
  • small red bumps - postules - around edge
  • pimples - may be infection of hair follicles - folliculitis- white bumps
  • may have scabs around edge
  • painful, red inflamed skin

  • The fungi called dermatophytes live in dead tissues such as dead skin cells. These infections are also called tinea.

A common tinea skin infection is ringworm.

Athletes foot and jock itch are also caused by tinea fungi.

The skin infection symptoms of a dermatophyte skin infection rash are:

  • round shape
  • red
  • flat
  • raised outer edge
  • normal skin in middle
  • scaly
  • may have blisters

  • The skin infection, tinea versicolor, is caused by the mold-like fungi Pityrosporum orbiculare or Pityrosporum ovale.

    The symptoms are:

  • scaly patches which vary in color - that is wheare the name "versicolor" came from.
  • lesions can appear darker than surrounding skin in light skin
  • lesions can appear lighter than surrounding skin in dark skin
  • infected skin cannot tan normally
  • patches are much more noticeable after being exposed to the sun.

  • Even though skin infection symptoms can be annoying, they will usually clear up with treatment. The many treatments for a skin yeast infection give you alot of choices. Remember to consult your health provider if you have not had a fungal infection on your skin before.
