Skin Infection Treatment That Is Easy

A skin infection is caused by an overgrowth of Candida Albicans yeast, Malassezia furfur yeast, mold, and fungi called dermatophytes.

Yeasts, mold and fungi live on our skin.

When the outer skin layer breaks down, yeast can overgrow, causing a skin fungal infection.

There are 4 common types of skin infection

- Cutaneous Candidiasis, Dermatophyte infections, Intertrigo and Tinea Versicolor rashes.

Treat Cutaneous Candidiasis

• aloe vera - apply topically on rash
• calendula cream - apply topically on rash
• tea tree oil - apply topically on rash
• goldenseal - mixed with water to form a paste - use as a salve on skin rash
• Neem Seed Oil - used topically for skin irritation

• antifungal creams or powders
  

• if skin yeast infection rash is persistent or covers a large area - may use oral antifungal medications

• often a combined treatment consisting of an antifungal cream and a corticosteroid (an anti-inflammatory hormone), which makes the red itchy patches go away
• OTC anti-dandruff shampoo that contains selenium sulfide

Treat Tinea Versicolor

• topical antifungal medications very effective because yeasts inhabit top skin layer
• OTC antifungal creams - apply twice a day for 10-14 days note: small tubes may run out quickly and are hard to apply to large areas
• oral antifungal medications for serious rashes may be needed - ketoconazole (brand name Nizoral) or five daily doses of itraconazole (brand name Sporanox)
• apply OTC antidandruff shampoo that contains selenium sulfide on the patches - 1% (Selsun Blue) or 1% ketoconazole shampoo - can apply for 15 minutes twice a week for two to four weeks or apply overnight and washing off in the morning for a week - may be irritating and miss hard to reach spots
• bathe daily to remove dead cells and fungus from your skin
• can use prescription-strength antifungal creams
• can try stronger form of selenium sulfide (2.5%)
• prescription-strength ketoconazole shampoo (2%)

• if rash is persistent or covers a large area - may use oral antifungal medications

Treat Intertrigo (if it has yeast complications)

• dry skin by using air conditioning and absorbent powders and by exposing skin folds to the air
• diluted vinegar, or wet tea bags often are effective for drying skin, especially if followed by fanning or cool blow-drying
• keep skin surfaces in deep folds separated with cotton or linen cloth
• wash daily with an antibacterial soap

• Commercially available barrier pastes sold for diaper dermatitis can be helpful (zinc oxide paste)
• topical antifungal creams or powders i.e. dust with Zeasorb AF Powder
• can use a drying solution such as Burow's compresses - apply 20-30 minutes several times a day to promote drying
• 0.5 -1.0% hydrocortisone cream twice daily may help
