You might! Read on to find out what it is and what you can do about it.

What is a Vaginal Yeast Infection ?

A vaginal infection is also known as vaginal thrush, vaginitis, a vaginal infection, moniliasis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, or as simply, a yeast infection.

It is when you have irritation of your vagina and surrounding tissues caused by yeast.

Vaginal thrush is very common and most women will experience at least one vaginal infection at some point. At least half of these women will experience more than 1 vaginal yeast infection.

Small amounts of yeast, called Candida Albicans, are always present in the vaginal area.

A yeast infection occurs when something causes the Candida yeast to overgrow.

Causes

Vaginal infections from yeast are typically caused by antibiotic use or a high sugar diet. But, there are other reasons why you might get a vaginal infection. Read more vaginal thrush causes here.

Yeast Infection Symptoms

The most common symptom is vaginal itching. This symptom can be enough to drive you crazy. Did you know that some women don't experience itching? Read more yeast infection symptoms info here.

Diagnosis

A vaginal yeast infection and vaginal thrush can be diagnosed by noting and observing the symptoms - particularly the itching and discharge.

However, these symptoms aren't always present.

Therefore, your doctor may do a pelvic exam or gynecological exam to take a specimen scraped from the affected area. This will determine if a yeast infection is present.

Often, a yeast infection may be wrongly self-diagnosed. This may lead to a delay in getting treatment that you need. If you have not had a yeast infection before and are unsure, go see your doctor for a proper diagnosis.
